Donegal Bay and Yeats Country

From Slieve League to a Yeats Country audio tour, find all of the bay's treasures.

2017 marks the 160th anniversary of world famous Belleek Pottery who bring you this tour as lead partner. Just a short drive from Ballyshannon, ensure you make time for a visit to their Visitors Centre. In 2015, William Butler Yeats was feted in nearby Sligo and beyond as it marked the 150th anniversary of his birth in 1865. We’re delighted to have a full audio tour of the best locations the poet is associated with for your enjoyment on the south side of Donegal Bay, but we also guide you out to Slieve League, the highest accessible sea cliffs in Ireland, via a few stop off points that are sure to captivate.

Donegal Bay must rank as one of the most impressive bays in Ireland; its pedigree in terms of scenery and amenities making it a must-see location on any stay in the north west. To the south side lies the plateau of Ben Bulben under which the mythical Fianna fought battles, fairies held court and Yeats now casts a cold eye. To the north east, Barnesmore Gap rises where the Black Pig train passed, where bandits hung from the gallows and where Biddy O’Barnes now awaits the weary traveller. Then to the west, past the red streams of Teelin, beyond the welcome of the Rusty Mackerel, lies the mighty Slieve League sea cliffs rising some 600 metres above the water.

Approaching Slieve League from the sea allows you to savour the full panorama we’ve described. Like the back of a well-built quarterback, the heaving frame of Slieve League is the final vanguard before the wild Atlantic. Not in truth the highest cliffs in Europe, but surely contenders for the most awe-inspiring? On this guide, we suggest you base yourself in Donegal Town. We offer a Donegal Town heritage guide which can be found under the Categories with the marking ‘DT’ before each of the 24 points of interest. Our points of interest on the guide to Slieve League are marked ‘SL’ and ensures you discover the many treasures dotted along the coast on the way to the cliffs.

POIs on your trip down to Sligo are marked as ‘DBS’ for Donegal Bay South and takes you as far as Grange. Some of the hidden gems of the area are included and marked as ‘HG’ under the Categories. Finally, a two day tour of Yeats Country is included and marked as ‘YC’ with Sligo Town sites marked as ‘YS’. And yes, we legitimately believe that a proper guide of Donegal Bay would include Yeats Country, so in it went – and best of all, comes with our racontour audio which plays automatically as you travel and will be of interest to poetry fans out there. Another tour we’ve included may come in useful with this tour – our Wild Atlantic Gems tour, which includes places to see, eat and stay along this famous coastline.
